Business models and unit economics
Part of the Management Trainee learning and recruiting path. Read the explanation and example, attempt the task, then open the self-check.
Know what to learn for your role.
From foundations to a work sample, with sources, tasks and self-checks.
Understand
Identify who pays, why, and how costs arise. Contribution per unit is price minus variable cost. Total contribution must cover fixed costs. Distinguish revenue, profit and cash.
Worked example
Price 80, variable cost 50 and fixed costs 30,000 imply contribution 30 and break-even 1,000 orders.
Examples and numbers are educational, not employer questions, live market data or hiring criteria.
Practise and keep your output
Budget a campus delivery service with prices, volumes, variable/fixed costs and break-even volume.
Keep inputs and sources, assumptions, steps, results and uncertainties in your own document. Attempt independently before checking below.
After attempting: answer and self-check
Divide fixed costs by contribution. Negative unit contribution cannot be fixed simply by adding orders.
