Accounting cycle and financial assertions

Part of the Big Four & Professional Services learning and recruiting path. Read the explanation and example, attempt the task, then open the self-check.

Understand

Learn transactions, entries, ledgers and statements, then assertions such as existence, completeness, valuation and cut-off. Evidence for one assertion does not automatically establish another.

Worked example

Seeing inventory can support existence, but damaged items need separate valuation evidence.

Examples and numbers are educational, not employer questions, live market data or hiring criteria.

Practise and keep your output

For cash, receivables and inventory, list two assertions and possible misstatements. Map a purchase through the accounts.

Keep inputs and sources, assumptions, steps, results and uncertainties in your own document. Attempt independently before checking below.

After attempting: answer and self-check

Link each assertion to a risk. Distinguish tracing records to assets for existence from assets to records for completeness.
