Use an MVP to test one risk

Features keep growing without evidence users can complete the task.

Change direction and availability

An MVP boundary, acceptance script and test record.

2026-10-26.2 · 40 minutes estimated; work in several sessions

Saved on this device; sign in to import explicitly.

Next · 5–15 minutes

Spend ten minutes removing three features unrelated to the current test.

Prerequisites and goal

A bounded problem and critical assumption.

Start with diagnostics; skip explanations you can already apply independently.

Minimum is relative to the hypothesis

Decide whether the test concerns comprehension, completion, reuse or payment. A clickable prototype tests understanding, not long-term payment. A concierge service may test value if scope and costs are explicit. Do not disguise unavailable features as promises.

Design the task and observation

Give the user a real goal without narrating clicks. Define completion and log time, obstacles, assistance and exits. Disclose prototype status. AI may build pages and scripts, but check input handling, errors and mobile behavior. Accept against the risk and task, not feature count.

Worked example · fictional

From a problem to inspectable work

Fictional: a team plans accounts, community, payments and AI reconciliation before testing the output.

  1. Manually produce an exception list from anonymized samples.
  2. Observe whether the user can interpret it and correct an actual discrepancy.

The first version contains inputs and exception explanations; test value before estimating automation cost.

Failure case and repair

Treat sign-ups as proof the core feature works.

Registration and task completion are different outcomes.

Measure core completion and assistance.

Read primary sources with a task

S1 · Y Combinator · Startup School

Choose the MVP, getting users or team leadership lesson relevant to your task.

Output: Record one method, its limits and this week's experiment.

Free public course; some tools require free registration. · Source checked 2026-10-26

S2 · Steve Blank · The Customer Development Process · Stanford eCorner

Watch 00:00–03:33 on testing business hypotheses with customers; the source also links a transcript.

Output: Turn three opinions into questions about observable behavior.

Free public video; use the original clip if the transcript is unavailable. · Source checked 2026-10-26

Glossary
Evidence and inference
Evidence is traceable material or observation; inference is an interpretation requiring assumptions.
Transfer practice
Apply the method independently in a new situation, checking which conditions have changed.
