Prerequisites and goal
One current job description and an experience or sample.
Start with diagnostics; skip explanations you can already apply independently.
Translate adjectives into performance
Analytical ability is not an exercise. Identify the inputs, decision and audience. Translate it into observable work, such as cleaning a table in two hours and justifying missing-data treatment. Separate employer requirements from your interpretation.
Convert gaps into evidence tasks
Attach evidence, personal contribution and a gap to each requirement. Syntax gaps need focused drills; judgment gaps need cases and counterexamples. Label simulated work. Prioritize recurring requirements that affect delivery; course counts do not substitute for work quality.
Worked example · fictional
From a problem to inspectable work
A fictional JD asks for SQL, communication and judgment; the student lists three courses.
Map SQL to a checked query and communication to a one-page nontechnical memo.
Check judgment by asking why the metric was chosen and what would change the recommendation.
Prepare a sample with queries, definitions, findings and limits; courses remain background, with unresolved skills marked as gaps.
Failure case and repair
Copy every JD keyword into the skills section.
There is no evidence to probe.
Retain evidence whose steps and limits you can explain.
