Use outreach to answer a specific question

I do not know whom to contact, what to ask or how to handle silence.

Change direction and availability

A contextual outreach draft and follow-up record.

2026-10-26.2 · 40 minutes estimated; work in several sessions

Saved on this device; sign in to import explicitly.

Next · 5–15 minutes

Spend ten minutes resolving one question from public sources.

Prerequisites and goal

Read the person's public material and identify one unanswered question.

Start with diagnostics; skip explanations you can already apply independently.

Make the request answerable

Match the person to the question. Explain why you chose them and ask one bounded question, such as how a role divides analysis and client communication. Avoid bundling referrals, CV review and mentoring. Have an alternative source if they cannot respond.

Follow contextual signals

Respect any stated reply timetable. Otherwise consider deadlines, context and the request before one proportionate follow-up. Silence is neither rejection of your worth nor consent. Record facts, information and open questions; respect preferences before introductions or public quotations.

Worked example · fictional

From a problem to inspectable work

Fictional: a student wants a referral without understanding the role.

  1. Read the role and public background; identify an unclear delivery boundary.
  2. Ask about that task before deciding whether to apply.

The draft states context, names what was read and asks how junior deliverables are reviewed, without presuming a referral.

Failure case and repair

Mass-send a long request for ongoing mentoring.

The request is costly and poorly matched.

Ask one specific question and explain the match.

Glossary
Evidence and inference
Evidence is traceable material or observation; inference is an interpretation requiring assumptions.
Transfer practice
Apply the method independently in a new situation, checking which conditions have changed.
